Dr Rocío García-Carrión presented research with social impact to foster resilience in the post-pandemic world at the Royal Society UK
The conference entitled ‘Lessons of resilience and social inclusion from COVID-19’ funded by the British Academy took place on June 1-2, 2023 at the London headquarters of the Royal Society, the oldest learned society in the UK and one of the oldest in Europe. Ikerbasque researcher at the University of Deusto Dr Rocío García-Carrión was invited to speak at the event, convened by Dr Cristina Azaola (University of Southampton), which gathered scholars from academic institutions from different European countries (Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Spain), Latin America, and the United States to engage in a debate on resilient responses to overcoming the devastating social effects of the pandemic.
Dr García-Carrión was part of the international and multidisciplinary panel of scientists who presented cutting-edge research in the field, focussing on educational actions that have supported the most vulnerable students and communities in their learning paths and emotional well-being – both in the midst of COVID-19 lockdowns and in reducing existing inequalities. Dr García-Carrión explained how the Horizon Europe project SCIREARLY (www.scirearly.eu) has been built on the solid foundation of scientific evidence achieved in recent decades to address the academic and social success of students.
Advancing scientific knowledge and ensuring its contributions to the improvement of the conditions and lives of the people of educational communities are fundamental to SCIREARLY, which is dedicated to policies and practices based on scientific research to reduce underachievement and early school leaving in Europe. As such, it was emphasized that the contributions of SCIREARLY are aligned with the most urgent needs of the educational field, not only in terms of reducing educational inequalities but also overcoming those that persist and increase over time. It is high time to bolster our efforts to make the goal of overcoming existing inequalities a reality – and such efforts include SCIREARLY.

El 1 y 2 de junio, la British Academy acogió la conferencia titulada “‘Lessons of resilience and social inclusion from COVID-19’. La Royal Society”. El debate sobre las respuestas resilientes que se activaron para afrontar las devastadoras consecuencias de la pandemia tuvo lugar en la sede de la Royal Society en Londres, la sociedad científica más antigua de Reino Unido y de las primeras en establecerse en Europa. La Dra. Rocío García-Carrión, investigadora Ikerbasque en la Universidad de Deusto e Investigadora Principal de SCIREARLY, fue invitada por la Dra. Cristina Azaola (Universidad de Southampton, UK) a impartir una conferencia en este evento, que reunió personalidades académicas de diferentes países europeos (Alemania, Irlanda, Reino Unido y España), latinoamericanos (México, Argentina, entre otros), y los Estados Unidos.
La Dra. García-Carrión formó parte del panel internacional y multidisciplinar de científicas y científicos que presentaron investigaciones punteras centradas en acciones educativas efectivas en la promoción del éxito académico y el bienestar del alumnado incluso durante la pandemia, contribuyendo así a combatir las desigualdades sociales que el COVID exacerbó. La Dra. García-Carrión expuso cómo SCIREARLY (www.scirearly.eu) se ha construido sobre la sólida base de todas las evidencias científicas logradas en las últimas décadas para asegurar el éxito académico y social de todo el alumnado.
Avanzar en el conocimiento científico y asegurando que éste logra mejorar las condiciones y la vida de las personas de cada comunidad educativa está en la base de SCIREARLY, que se orienta a estudiar las políticas y prácticas educativas basadas en la evidencia científica para reducir el abandono escolar en Europa. Así, también en el debate, se enfatizó que las aportaciones de SCIREARLY se alinean con las necesidades más urgentes que el ámbito educativo reclama para reducir las desigualdades educativas, también para superar las que persisten y aumentan con el tiempo. Estamos en el momento crítico para aunar esfuerzos que hagan posible esa superación radical de las desigualdades. Ese algo es SCIREARLY.
